About Guanacaste

Guanacaste is the version of Costa Rica most postcards show, but it’s also the one part of the country that doesn’t look like a rainforest. This is Costa Rica’s driest province, with a dry season stretching roughly eight months, and it protects one of the rarest ecosystems in the Americas: tropical dry forest, found only in scattered pockets from Mexico to Argentina.
That contrast is the whole trip here. You can surf and sail off Tamarindo, then drive two hours inland and find yourself hiking bubbling mud pots on the slopes of an actively erupting volcano, Rincón de la Vieja, one of only three volcanoes in Costa Rica still considered active.
